A root word is a word or word part from which other words grow, usually through the addition of prefixes and suffixes.
Root Word Meaning
retro Root word "retro" comes from Latin, meaning "backward, back". Examples: retroactive - relating to something in the past; retrogress - to go back to an earlier condition; retrospect - the remembering of past events.

circum/circle Root word "circum/circle" comes from Latin, meaning "around, about". Examples: circumnavigate - to sail around; circumscribe - to draw around; circumspect - looking around
